Abstract:

This randomized controlled study investigated the effect of Sahaja Yoga Meditation (SYM) on mental health, adjustment, and mathematics achievement among 200 secondary school students. Participants were equally assigned to an experimental group (SYM, n = 100), who practiced daily meditation for over three months, and a control group (n = 100), who maintained their regular routines. The following standardized tools were administered pre- and post-intervention: the Mental Health Scale (MHS-TSBA, 2017), Bell’s Adjustment Inventory (BAI, 2006), and a curriculum-aligned Mathematics Achievement Test. Data were statistically analyzed using t-tests and ANCOVA. Results demonstrated that students practicing SYM showed significant improvements in all targeted domains relative to controls. The experimental group’s mental health scores (MHS-TSBA) improved substantially (mean: 56.4 to 64.7; t = 6.23, p < 0.001, d = 0.98), particularly with reductions in stress and anxiety and increased emotional maturity. Adjustment (BAI) scores rose markedly (mean: 50.2 to 58.9; t = 7.12, p < 0.001, d = 1.05) across home, health, social, and emotional domains, reflecting better psychosocial function. Mathematics achievement also improved significantly (mean: 45.6 to 55.8; t = 8.01, p < 0.001, d = 1.20), while the control group’s scores remained stable across all measures. The minimal changes in the control group confirm that these benefits are attributable to the SYM intervention. The use of validated, culturally relevant tools further strengthens the findings. In conclusion, SYM appears to be an effective, holistic intervention for enhancing mental wellness, adjustment, and academic performance in adolescents. These outcomes support the integration of meditation-based approaches into school curricula, aligning with contemporary educational policies that prioritize students’ well-being alongside academic proficiency.
