Unveiling the self: Memory and human connection in Kazuo Ishiguro's ‘The Remains of the Day’

Abstract:

The present study analyses the interaction of memory, self-awareness and human connection in Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day (1989), emphasising how these themes reveal the protagonist Stevens’ conflict with identity and emotional suppression. The novel examines, through Stevens' unreliable narrative, how memory serves as a tool for self-deception and a trigger for delayed self-awareness. In post-war England, Stevens' introspective journey, initiated by a road trip to reunite with Miss Kenton, the former housekeeper at Darlington Hall, exposes the personal sacrifices resulting from his stringent commitment to duty and class-based professionalism. His inability to reciprocate Miss Kenton’s emotional advances illustrates how society norms may stifle genuine personal ties, fostering solitude. This argument contends that Ishiguro utilises Stevens' disjointed memories to attack the cultural and historical dynamics of mid-20th-century England, namely the exaltation of loyalty and restraint, which estranges individuals from their aspirations. Utilising narrative theory and psychological insights into memory, the research emphasises how Ishiguro’s understated style and complex characterisation render Stevens’ internal turmoil universal, prompting readers to examine the narratives that influence their own lives. The findings indicate that The Remains of the Day emphasises the importance of vulnerability in fostering meaningful connections, presenting memory as a dual force that both conceals and illuminates avenues for self-reconciliation. This study enhances literary studies by clarifying how Ishiguro's oeuvre connects personal and societal aspects of identity development.
