Abstract:

Digital preservation of cultural heritage is critical to ensure the long-term availability and conservation of historical, artistic, and intellectual properties in the digital age. India, with its enormous and rich cultural heritage, has initiated various initiatives to guarantee long-term availability and preservation of its heritage. The National Digital Library of India (NDLI) offers a central digital repository of books, manuscripts, and educational resources, enabling open access and dissemination of knowledge. Likewise, the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM) aims at digitizing and preserving rare manuscripts to avoid physical degradation. The Digital India Programme has made an immense contribution to heritage conservation through the integration of technology-based platforms like the National Virtual Library of India (NVLI) and the Indian Culture Portal. These programs enable the digitization of rare artifacts, documents, and historical records to make them widely available for research, education, and public interest. The National Archives of India (NAI) Digitization Project is particularly important in the process of digitizing government records and administrative papers to their digital equivalents, thereby preserving them for future analysis.

In spite of all these developments, digital preservation has been challenged by technological obsolescence, data security threats, and limited funding. To evade all these obstacles, constant technological advancements, safe digital storage options, and interagency cooperation among government agencies, research centers, and technologists are very critical. This research identifies India's strategic method of digital preservation of heritage, with a focus on the role of policy backing, technological advancements, and sustainable financing in securing the long-term conservation of cultural heritage. Enhanced efforts will help India preserve its rich cultural past while making it available to generations to come.
