Author(s):

Afrah Sofi Abdul Hussein

Abstract:

This study analyses the concept of vengeance in Shakespeare's classic Hamlet. This study will first elucidate the introduction, The Elizabethan Age, and Autobiography of William Shakespeare. Furthermore, by a meticulous examination of the texts, this research demonstrates the elements and incentives that gave rise to the concept of vengeance in Hamlet. The scholar elucidates the notion of vengeance in the theatrical production. T The motif of vengeance in Shakespeare's Hamlet functions as a major motivating factor that moulds the storyline and the growth of characters. The drama delves on the ethical and psychological intricacies linked to revenge, notably via the deeds of Prince Hamlet, who wrestles with the spectral call to seek retribution for his father's killing. This pursuit of retribution gives rise to existential enquiries of justice, morality, and the repercussions of one's deeds. Through Hamlet's deliberate postponement of his vengeance, the subject of revenge gradually becomes more encompassing, leading to eventual tragedy and loss. The dynamic relationship between retribution and insanity, the consequences of ethical ambiguity, and the lethal results for both the seeker and the victims underscore Shakespeare's profound analysis of the human experience and the dangers of uncontrolled retribution. The researcher subsequently demonstrates how Shakespeare conveyed the idea of the study in his play. The findings of the inquiry and the discovery made by the researcher upon the completion of the study are reported at the research's end.
