A glimpse of Indology: Romance in Indian classic Sanskrit poetry and drama

Author(s):

Ratan Kaul

Abstract:

In ancient India, Sanskrit flourished as a highly refined language, producing a vast and diverse body of literature that spanned genres such as grammar, philosophy, social and religious laws, astrology, and literature. This article offers a glimpse into the niche realm of classical Sanskrit poetry and drama, focusing on the theme of romance and its profound impact on emotional expression and literary aesthetics. Romance, a central theme in Sanskrit literature, is vividly captured through poetic imagery, emotional intensity, and symbolic narratives.
The article delves into the nuanced portrayal of romance, exploring both its sensual and spiritual dimensions, and features excerpts from the works of celebrated poets and playwrights like Kalidas, Bhasa, and Bhavabhuti. These masterpieces highlight the vivid imagery, emotional depth, and the interplay between love and nature that define Sanskrit romantic literature. The discussion is further enriched by an exploration of the blend between earthly and divine love, exemplified in the ethereal romance found in Jayadeva’s Gita Govinda.
