Abstract:

Indigenous communities have their eclectic set of health beliefs and practices variously influenced by their unique history of ethnic culture, heritage, surrounding physical and cultural environment. With the introduction of biomedicine as part of colonial and post-colonial reforms, the health care behaviour pattern of the indigenous communities has undergone a dramatic change reflecting a pluralistic health care culture. The concept of Medical Pluralism i.e. a pattern of co-existence and competition among multiple healthcare options in a specific region was first envisaged by Charles Leslie in 1970s that has become a common care seeking culture in all over the world in the present era. Social scientists take interest in studying this culture from multidimensional perspective. This paper studies the coexistence of both traditional and Western medicine in health care behaviour of Rajbanshis - the indigenous community of Koch Bihar and analyses the visible pluralistic pattern in their medical culture.
