Abstract:

The Ghaggar River flowing through the northern Indian states of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan is a seasonal river with significant historical, cultural and ecological importance. In recent decades, however, the river has become heavily polluted due to untreated industrial effluents, domestic sewage and agricultural runoff. This research paper investigates the major sources of pollution, analyzes the environmental and human health impacts and explores existing and potential mitigation strategies. The study also evaluates the role of governmental policies and public awareness in combating river pollution.

This research provides comprehensive data on pollution sources, impacts and viable mitigation strategies tailored for the Ghaggar Basin. The findings can inform policymakers, NGOs and environmental bodies to frame more effective interventions. Additionally, it promotes environmental awareness among local communities through data-backed engagement. This study in desolate landscapes generate undesirable silt and adversely affect stream flow to downstream settlements. The principal objectives are to prevent the degradation of essential resources such as water, soil and vegetation. Watershed management is an endeavor to maintain the equilibrium between human activities and elements of the natural environment, including plants, land and water.
