Subaltern outpourings in Virginia Woolf’s professions for women and Kamala Das’s an introduction

Author(s):

Digvijay Singh

Abstract:

Both the authors-Virginia Woolf and Kamala Das-have been tortured and tormented by patriarchal system. Virginia Woolf mentions the patriarchal and hegemonic system that was deeply ingrained in her mind and soul. She exemplifies it by ‘The Angel in the House’ in her essay Professions for Women. Needless to say that women mightn’t have been afflicted by male chauvinistic society. While drawing socio-cultural and other parallels between Woolf and Das, there is no denying the fact that Kamala Das was also forced to follow the orthodoxy-ridden conventional notions of patriarchal social set up. She exposes mean and chauvinistic proclivity through her poem An Introduction.
